Understandably, client confidentiality prevents disclosing details of the many crisis communications cases we’ve handled. Activities have involved crisis communications planning and spokesperson training, as well as “heat of battle” functions including message development and refinement, news distribution, media response, media monitoring, and targeted stakeholder communications. Cases have involved labor relations, patient care, human resources, and other operational issues.
When faculty in the Stanford Department of Medicine would attend conferences or find other opportunities to meet potential research partners or recruit faculty, they were at a loss for any kind of “leave behind” to showcase the top-notch work taking place at their leading academic medical center. That’s why they engaged Knox Communications to create and manage an impressive display of the Department’s work. The result was a piece so effective that the Department has retained Knox Communications to prepare annual reports every year since.
The Mount Zion Crisis Clinic, a 24/7 emergency psychiatric intervention service, was slated to close because of insufficient funding from the San Francisco Department of Public Health. The clinic’s parent body retained Knox Communications, which devised and carried out a campaign to exert public pressure on the health department to increase its support to the clinic. In a textbook example of how to use community relations tactics effectively to change public policy, funding was maintained, which preserved continuity of care for several hundred psychiatric patients.
The realization of a dream envisioned in a planning document is what grew out of this case statement for a major donor fundraising campaign mounted by the Community Working Group. Working in tandem with the campaign committee, Knox Communications fashioned a brochure and inserts that were used effectively to raise the needed funds to construct this community of affordable rental homes for lower income families in Palo Alto, California.
You saved our bacon, John. Thanks for all your hard work, your continued optimism and your ability to jump onto the snorting, bucking bronco and never let go.
